FAQ

10bii Financial Calculator (iOS, Android) / 10b Financial Calculator (iOS, Android)

A: Don't worry about it; we felt the same way when we picked up our physical 10bII models for the first time! We've put together a 10bii Help page and several video tutorials to guide you through several of the main tasks people typically do with these calculators. Check them out and if you still have questions, contact us and we'll do our best to help.

A: Nope, In A Day Development is not affiliated with Hewlett-Packard in any way. We do love their 10bII Financial Calculator, though. What we didn't love was carrying around both our phone and the physical HP calculator. That, and several functions of the calculator (most notably the Uneven Cashflow entry interface and Amortization Schedules) are things we found hard to use. So we decided to make smartphone apps so we could leave the physical calculators at home and carry only one device. And in that effort, we also decided to improve the parts of the calculator we found hard to use. Take a look at the screenshots and tutorial videos and you'll see what we mean. Other reasons you should buy our app include the fact that our app costs 85% less than the physical calculator and HP doesn't have a 10b or a 10bII app out for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Android. That, and we really have made some significant usability improvements, which (as avid users of financial calculators ourselves) we find immeasurably useful.

A: Hold on there, it may be a misunderstanding.

The most common reason that causes users to think their PMT calculation isn't working has to do with the Payments per Year setting. Several models of financial calculator out there default to 1 Payment per Year (P/YR), but our app defaults to 12 just like the HP10bII. So hit the Orange Shift button and take a look at the orange label above the P/YR button. That will show you how many Payments per Year your calculator is set to use. If you want to change it, just tap the number of payments per year you want, then Orange Shift, and then P/YR (which is in the upper right hand corner, sharing the same button as PMT).

Another common reason for confusion is that some types of calculator (including Microsoft Excel, which a lot of people use to do amortizations and Time Value of Money calculations) expect you to put periodic rate into the Interest register. The 10b and 10bii calculators, on the other hand, expect the annual rate to be in the Interest register (which is even labeled 'I/YR' for Interest Rate per Year). If you want to use 10% as your Interest Rate per Year, just put 10 into I/YR, don't divide it by 12 or anything like that.

These are by far the most common cause of unexpected answers we've encountered when answering questions about the apps. If you are making sure you are doing both of these parts correctly and are still having problems, please contact us and we'll be happy to help. Who knows, you might even help us to find and fix a legitimate error in the app (those are rare but they do turn up from time to time).

A: That's very true. There are certain parts of the input methods that are needed on the physical calculator that we find cumbersome, error-inducing, or just plain hard to remember. Those functions, we decided to change, taking advantage of the greater flexibility the smartphone platforms afford us in terms of where to put things, how to lay things out, and so on.

A good example of this is the Amortization Schedule. Instead of putting in a period number and hitting Amort, just hit Amort and the whole schedule will be displayed for you, including the ability to email it, focus on just a group of periods, see your total or per-period principal, interest, and balance and much more. It's different than the physical calculator, yes, but it provides a much greater amount of information much more simply, and in a more usable format than the physical calculator does. Give it a try and see if you disagree that it's better.

We've put together video tutorials for many of the things we changed to make sure you know how to use the new functionality.

Easy Money Planner

A: Once you fill out one of the Planners and get your answers, just tap the 'Email Results' button to send the results to anyone you like. It's that easy!

A: Send it to us and if we like it, we'll incorporate it into the app. We won't be able to pay you for your idea, but we will happily provide you with a code that you can give to someone you like which will let them download the app for free. We'll also give you credit for the idea on our website.

Wordventure!

A: It's easy! You can purchase additional Story Packs from within the app. Just choose the ones you want, tap them to look at their descriptions, and you'll see a 'Buy' button. Tap that and you'll be prompted for your username and password. Story Packs cost just $0.99 and each Pack comes with three Stories! As always, once you have a Story, you can make as many Wordventures out of each as you want for no additional cost.

A: Nope, not at all. In A Day Development is not connected in any way with Penguin Press, which produces MADLIBS® word games. Though we were inspired by their general format, all of our Stories are completely original.

A: Send it to us and if we like it, we'll make a Story Pack out of it (we may need to modify it somewhat to make it 'work'). We won't be able to pay you anything for it, but we will give you a coupon code that you can use to download it for free, and distribute to your friends so they can download it for free as well. We'll also give you credit in the screen describing the Story Pack so everyone will know what a verbal genius you are!

Sound Effect Apps, including Your Mom!!, Fail!, etc

A: Press the button.

A: It shouts things at you. Hopefully, this makes you laugh and makes your day better than it was. Use of the app may have been linked to Unicorn sightings in some localities. Yes, that was a joke.

A: Here's a list of our voice actors. Depending on the app, one or more of these people have contributed sounds. We're deeply grateful to all of our contributors for the content you get to enjoy!
